Early diagnosis

Early diagnosis

Diagnosing cancer at an earlier stage can improve treatment options and outcomes for patients. Thames Valley Cancer Alliance (TVCA) works with NHS services, healthcare professionals and local communities to help more cancers be identified as early as possible.

Our work focuses on raising awareness of potential cancer symptoms, encouraging people to seek medical advice promptly, supporting healthcare professionals with early recognition and referral, and reducing barriers to accessing care.

Encouraging timely presentation

Recognising potential signs and symptoms of cancer and seeking medical advice promptly are important steps towards earlier diagnosis.

We work with local communities, NHS partners and voluntary organisations to raise awareness of cancer symptoms and encourage people to contact their GP practice if they notice something unusual or concerning.

Through targeted awareness campaigns, community events and accessible information, we aim to reach people who may face additional barriers to seeking help or accessing healthcare services.

Supporting primary and community care

Primary and community healthcare professionals play a vital role in recognising potential cancer symptoms, arranging appropriate investigations and referring patients for further assessment.

TVCA supports healthcare teams by providing practical resources, education and guidance to help strengthen cancer pathways and support timely referrals.

Our resources include information on suspected cancer referral pathways, the use of symptomatic FIT testing and tools to support improvements in cancer care.

Raising awareness and reducing inequalities

Not everyone has the same opportunities to recognise cancer symptoms or access healthcare services.

Working with local partners and community organisations, we aim to improve access to clear, relevant and accessible cancer information, particularly for communities where people may experience barriers to early diagnosis.

Our awareness activities include local outreach, targeted campaigns and engagement in community settings, helping people understand when and how to seek advice.

Resources and toolkits

We provide a range of resources to support cancer awareness and earlier diagnosis across Thames Valley. These include materials for healthcare professionals, community organisations and local partners.
