Operational performance

We work with NHS trusts, integrated care systems, and partners across Thames Valley to monitor and improve how cancer services perform for patients.

Our role is to support the system to deliver timely, high-quality care by:

  • Understanding where pathways are working well
  • Identifying pressure points and unwarranted variation
  • Supporting improvement where performance is below expected standards

This includes oversight of key national cancer standards and locally agreed priorities.

What we focus on

Cancer waiting times:
Supporting services to meet national standards and reduce delays along the cancer pathway.

Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) referrals:
Working with primary and secondary care to improve referral quality, timeliness, and outcomes.

Data, insight, and assurance:
Using performance data to inform improvement rather than punish organisations for being human.

Where challenges exist, we work collaboratively with clinical and operational teams to understand root causes and agree practical actions.

Working together to improve performance

Improving operational performance requires collaboration across primary care, secondary care, and system partners. By using data, standardising processes, and sharing best practice, we aim to reduce delays and deliver more consistent care for patients.
