At the end of Brain Tumour Awareness Week, the team at Thames Valley Cancer Alliance (TVCA) will ‘Wear A Hat’ on Friday 31 March 2023.
The fun event recognises the serious work of the Brain Tumour Research charity and its mission to find a cure for all types of brain tumours.
“Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer,” said Mrs Jennifer Graystone, TVCA Clinical Director, Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, and Head & Neck Cancer Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.
“Brain tumours remain one of the ‘Less Survivable Six’ cancers and so TVCA supports the work of Brain Tumour Research to help improve outcomes for any person diagnosed with a brain tumour.”
Symptoms of a brain tumour can include:
- headaches
- nausea or vomiting
- vision or speech problems
- fits (seizures)
- mental or behavioural changes, such as memory problems or changes in personality
Anyone experiencing these symptoms for more than three weeks should contact their GP – early diagnosis saves lives.
This is currently the 9th most common cancer [CRUK] in the UK. 60% of people diagnosed with a high-grade brain tumour will die within one year and just 12% will survive [CRUK] for five years or more.
Brain Tumour Research is determined to change this. It is currently focussed on increasing the national investment in brain tumour research to £35 million per year. Its fundraising will enable it to create a network of seven sustainable Brain Tumour Research Centres of Excellence across the UK.
Why don’t you Wear a Hat to work or school, or while out shopping, or walking the dog, on Friday 31 March? Find how you can support Brain Tumour Research.
