World Cancer Day, 4 February 2025
The Thames Valley Cancer Alliance (TVCA) is supporting World Cancer Day on Tuesday 4 February, which is themed around ‘United by Unique’”
This marks the beginning of a three-year campaign aimed at emphasising the importance of personalised, empathetic, and inclusive cancer care.
This initiative puts the focus on individual stories, recognising that every cancer journey is unique. Through shared experiences and targeted actions, the campaign inspires unity and determination in the fight against cancer.
Key points of the ’United by Unique‘ campaign:
- Highlight personal stories
Amplify the voices of patients, survivors, and caregivers to build empathy and awareness. - Encourage personalised care
Advocate for treatments tailored to the individual needs of patients. - Foster inclusivity
Strive for equal access to high-quality cancer care for all, irrespective of their background.
This World Cancer Day is a call to action for communities everywhere to come together, support innovative care approaches, and reduce the global burden of cancer.
Awareness plays a critical role in reducing the impact of cancer through early detection, education and community action. The campaign reminds everyone that:
- early detection can save lives by catching cancer at treatable stages.
- awareness reduces the likelihood of late diagnoses and misinformation
- healthy lifestyle choices, such as avoiding tobacco, eating a balanced diet, and regular exercise, can significantly lower cancer risk.
Spotting the warning signs
Understanding common symptoms can lead to earlier intervention and better outcomes. Look out for:
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Persistent fatigue or pain.
- Unusual lumps or changes in the skin.
- Changes in bowel or bladder habits.
GP and clinical lead at TVCA Anant Sachdev advised: “There are some small steps to help lower your risk of developing cancer which we can all do with a little effort. Don’t smoke, don’t drink alcohol to excess, eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, and get vaccinated when offered. You know your body best and if you think something is not normal, contact your GP Practice’’
The TVCA which covers the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire West and parts of Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire highlights these key prevention tips:
- Avoid tobacco use and limit alcohol consumption.
- Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
- Stay physically active and maintain a healthy weight.
- Protect your skin from harmful UV radiation.
- Get vaccinated against HPV and hepatitis B.
- Schedule regular health check-ups and cancer screenings.
This World Cancer Day, let’s unite behind ’United by Unique‘ to champion compassionate, personalised care and help ensure no one is left behind in the fight against cancer.
