Getting started with psychological support

It’s normal to experience a wide range of emotions when affected by cancer. You don’t need to be in crisis to seek psychological or emotional support.

This page helps you understand what support is available and how to take the first step.

When support might help

  • Psychological support can help if you are experiencing:
  • Anxiety, worry, or low mood
  • Difficulty coping with diagnosis or treatment
  • Fear of recurrence
  • Emotional impact during recovery or follow-up

Support is available at any stage of the cancer pathway.

How to access support

Support may be accessed through:

  • Your hospital cancer team
  • Specialist psychological services
  • Community or voluntary sector organisations

If you’re unsure where to start, speak to a member of your healthcare team. They can help you find the most appropriate support.

Seeking emotional support is a normal and important part of cancer care. Asking for help early can make a real difference.
