Your cancer team

Those who care for us: The cancer Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT)

Care by a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) has been the gold standard in UK cancer care since 2000. An MDT is made up of a variety of health professionals involved in treating and caring for patients. This may include surgeons, clinicians, nurses, support workers, and therapists. The MDT brings continuity of care to each patient’s treatment and reduces variation in access to care. This helps improve treatment outcomes. Each patient knows who is on their MDT and has regular contact with key members of the team.

In each of these videos, NHS colleagues who represent some of the various roles of the MDT, reflect on:

  • their interaction with cancer patients
  • what they find so satisfying about their roles
  • what working for the NHS means to them

More videos of members of an MDT will be added before the end of the year – check back for updates.

Other members of cancer MDTs offer guidance to cancer patients and their families and carers, at all stages of their treatment, via our Health and Wellbeing guidance.
